What is Credit Monitoring?
A credit monitoring service is a very useful way of receiving notifications of any changes to your credit file. However, this is a service that alerts you after there has been a change and is therefore reactive. For proactive identity theft protection please see the Comprehensive ID Protection Section
Checking your Credit Report regularly is a good way to protect yourself from identity fraud. Companies such as Equifax and Experian offer this service for a monthly charge, where by you are notified by email or SMS of any significant changes to your credit history such as address changes, significant balance changes or new applications.
This is an active service, however some companies claim they are offering you 24/7 fraud protection by simply allowing you unlimited access to check your credit file. REMEMBER: This service is not proactive and only informs you after a fraud has occurred.
